Indian Summer, and It’s Almost Guy Fawkes Day!

Another beautiful day in London.  Especially this evening.  Hoover and I went walking about 9.30 PM and ended up walking all the way from Kilburn down to Marble Arch–about 2.5 miles.

It was a busy Saturday evening–and everyone was out.  All the fresh fruit stands–stopped by an Egyptian shop that had a whole bunch of Korean phones and Burberry/Gucci/etc iPhone covers.  They had a woman’s phone, gold, with diamonds around it–faux, but oh, how pretty.  Next door I had a quick chat with the chap who is selling hookahs, globes made out of gold and jewels, and King Tuts cut out of marble.  Shop like an Egyptian.

I took so many photos that I decided to make a collage.  We stopped at the Maida Vale Little Venis Café there; we were both getting tired.

Have you rented a BorisBike yet?  Boris Johnson, our Mayor of London, has been actively expanding his bike rental scheme:  The Barclay Cycle Hire, which is part of the Transportation For London project.  The bikes can be rented for free for the first half hour, then (I think) £1.00 per day–or an annual plan.  There are bike paths everywhere–we just got a flyer through the post yesterday announcing that they’re going to put a contra-flow bike lane right outside our front window.

I thought it was time to sign up, and since I had Hoover with me, I decided to see if he’d fit in the front carrier/basket thingie–complete with a strap.  Like a little piggie on the way to Market, gentle little Hoover patiently let me balance him, untangle his leash, fiddle with the iPhone, and posed for his Bon Voyage photo!  I actually was going to take the bike up the side street for a block or two, but it all became too complicated.  I do think when we hire a bike, I’ll have to use a big brown knapsack with his pointy little head sticking out.  Another venue on which we can travel!

Hoover all ready to go in the carrier/basket/strap of a Boris Bike!

I’m letting you visitors know right now that London is going to be, um, a nightmare with traffic–if it’s anything like it is now.  Lord.  We took the 98 bus home–one local nutter started pitching one at the Bus Driver:  ”How long is this taking?!  It’s taken a half an hour to get from Marble Arch!  Why are you creeping along?  You made me miss my train!”  The Driver was concerned with a.) The Road; b.) Whatever Planet he was wishing he was on.  The harried dork stomped off the bus in a pique.  Traffic was just not moving!  They’ve got road works AND Thames Water re-digs going on–all the way up and down the Edgware Road AND Abbey Road.  Abbey Road is all full of the yellow arrow graffiti for the Engineers to decipher and dig.  This restoration of the old cast iron/stone poo-tunnels has been going on for two (?) years now!  It’s a huge job that removes a LOT of, um, dirt. We’ll stay above ground, thank you.

Finally, I can’t resist telling you about Hoover’s doggie treat.  Sadly, I didn’t film it. Right across the road from the Edgware Underground Station is a big billboard which rises straight out of the pavement.  There was a little patch of dry dirt about six inches square.  Hoover was tired, so I distracted him by stopping and giving him a short strip of Schmakos.  He was still busy watching for pedestrians and being alert next to the busy traffic, so instead of gobbling it, he instinctively decided to bury it and come back for it later.  You should have seen how . . . accomplished . . . his JRT skills have become!  He quickly, but carefully, scratched and dug a hole.  There were a few cigarette butts and some twigs there.  He put the Schmako in the shallow hole, pushed the butts and the twigs to the side–filled the hole in with dirt, and at the end, he distributed the butts and twigs over the top–Completely buried and camouflaged!  Remarkable.

I hope you all are having good weather where you are–it is such a joy to see everyone in good moods–and all this sunshine and people being out in the open has been such a boon and a blessing to the shop keepers!  There were so many people out eating good food tonight–smoking hookahs, eating lubia pulu, rice, lamb, yoghurt, and drinking mint tea.  The smells were great!

I’ll remember this Saturday night walk for a long time!  ’Nite!

Cold Evenings, Warm People!

Image

Through the 21 years that I’ve lived here in West Hampstead, one of the northwestern Metro communities that make up London, I have never, ever seen an Autumn like this!

My memories of Spring and Summer of 2011 include a few nice days and plenty of times where we were able to sit out in the garden.  But I also remember turning the thermostat on for the Fourth of July, and several times in August.  I remember sodden messes of dirt outside where we didn’t want to let Hoover go out because of the muddy pawprints brought back into the house.

October changed all of that.  First we had our Honolulu in London weekend–the headlines splashed it all over–the Britons were heading for the beaches, cleaning their gardens, and soaking up every ray of sunshine they could.

What’s strange is that has continued! It’s only now that it’s finally becoming sweater and jacket-wearing weather.  They days–and nights–are clear, cloudless and crystal cold.  I hope so much we have a chilling frost–it will get rid of the spiders, occasional flea family, and send all the other critters packing.  Our virgina creeper will become a scarlet robe.  The tree leaves will all drop off in one big whoosh and we can do one last quick cleanup in the garden.

Walking around on the West Hampstead streets with Hoover also is one of the iconic things I will remember forever during this beautiful Indian Summer.

Last night I ran across a happy, giggly bunch of students who make up that new, wonderful mixture of Happy People who come to the UK to live, study, and add to the cosmopolitan stew we call Home.  Here they were last night–laughing and tickling Hoover, making him jump up and down like the little insect he is, and talking about their London experiences.

I talked to Hamim who is Algerian, and then his mate, and two girlie friends–they were from Algeria (?), Italy (?), and who knows where.  The owner of the restaurant is Mario.  His tidy Italian restaurnt sits right down there on Broadhurst Gardens and is worthy of a visit.  To see Saraccino’s Restaurant, click here.

I came home last night, just thrilled at having met such nice people and being able to wear my leather jacket again.  Tonight I hope to go get some new warm leather gloves and perhaps go up there again and we can all share a drink.

Salut! Hamim and Pretty Ladies!  Enjoy your time here in London.  Woof!

Syrians, Italians, Romanians, Students, Good Food, West Hampstead!

Yum! Persimmon Season in the UK – Jam!

The Fruit/Veg Stands on the Kilburn High Road all are offering persimmons right now–along with tomatoes, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, etc.  This is THE finest time of the year to buy most of these kinds of produce.  The onions peel and chop perfectly, the tomatoes are juicy, yet don’t even need a bowl–just a chopping board–to chop them up for Mexican food.  Continuing, Beautiful, Appreciated, Extended Indian Summer here in the UK.

Salut! To the Guy(s) at Al Sabil!  I have to run back and give him back the £5.16 I put on tick to buy the sugar, lemons, and oranges!  Cheers!

And I’m Off! Post Number One from MarkInLondon!

Hi!

I’m delighted you arrived here.  I finally made the decision that Too Many Things were happening, and at SOME POINT I just have to start blogging and publishing.  And here we are.  Wish I knew how to add an mp3 sound clip of a champagne cork popping.

You’ll get to know me as we move along, and I can’t wait to find out who you are and what you’re up to.  Please comment, click, and “Like” things all over the place.  I’m very straight-forward about using all of my skills to make some Online Affiliate marketing money, and doing that without any obligation from you.  I’ve had an amazing life, and by sharing it with you and pointing you to some of the things that you can use, love, read, cherish, or enrich your own lives, I am again humbled to say, “I’m at your service.”

With that in mind, today’s simple blog post is a practical concern that I have to deal with in the next couple of weeks.  Where/how/when do we buy a good quality, cheap duvet set?

Rather than going into that here, I’ve already written an article about it; in fact, you might be here because, indeed, you read that article and were linked to my Main Hub Blog.  Thanks.

Have a look!  See what you think!  Let me know.
